Bel Group and WWF France renew their partnership to contribute together to sustainably transform the food system
- Bel Group and WWF France are renewing their long-term partnership for the fifth time, in favour of a more sustainable food model;
- For the past 13 years, this impact-oriented collaboration has aimed to reduce the Group’s environmental footprint across its entire value chain;
- The fight against the climate crisis, the preservation of biodiversity and water resources are interconnected challenges that are at the heart of this new partnership.
Partnering to transform the food system
Since 2012, Bel and WWF France have been working together to accelerate the transition to more responsible food. This strategic partnership is based on three major axes:
- Implementing regenerative agriculture practices: The Group is continuing its progress towards regenerative agriculture with the help of experts in the field in various countries. Regenerative agriculture, by putting the living soil back at the heart of the farm, makes it possible to mitigate climate change, preserve biodiversity and water resources, and support the resilience of farms.
- Preserving biodiversity and restoring natural ecosystems: With the support of WWF France, the Bel Group is continuing its work on taking planetary boundaries into account and measuring impact, through collective actions such as the Nature Transition Lab or through its commitment to SBTN (Science Based Targets Network for Nature). At the same time, the group continues to actively support the protection and restoration of ecosystems, particularly French forests, through WWF France’s Nature Impact initiative.
- Citizen engagement and awareness-raising: Bel and WWF France are joining forces to raise awareness and engage citizens in the preservation of biodiversity through communication campaigns with the Kiri® brand, and also more generally with the various stakeholders (institutions, companies, local actors, etc.) on the importance of accelerating the transition of the agricultural and food model, for which everyone has a role to play and can be an agent of change.
13 years of a growing commitment to more sustainable food
The partnership between Bel and WWF France is based on the common conviction that, in the face of the climate emergency, reducing the company’s environmental impact requires a profound transformation of each link in its value chain. In 2025, this renewal marks the thirteenth year of a fruitful and ambitious collaboration, confirming the long-term joint commitment of the two partners to the food transition.
A partnership that brings results
Focused on impact, the partnership between Bel and WWF France has already led to concrete progress.
With 55% of the Group’s carbon footprint linked to its upstream dairy sector, the first phases of the partnership between Bel and WWF France naturally focused on implementing practices in favour of a more responsible upstream dairy sector. This approach led to the signing of a Global Charter for a more sustainable upstream dairy in 2018, which sets ambitious objectives in terms of sustainable production, access to pasture, sustainable and local food, and animal welfare.
By the end of 2024, in France, 100% of the dairy cows of the APBO (Association des Producteurs Bel de l’Ouest) had access to pasture and are fed GMO-free, 98% of farms in the Azores practice grazing, and 94% of the dairy farms that supply the Group worldwide have carried out an initial carbon assessment.
To go further, the Bel Group has committed to ensuring that by 2030, 100% of the apples and milk used in its products will come from farms in transition to regenerative agriculture.
Over the years, the relationship between Bel and WWF France has continued to evolve and has gradually expanded to take into account ever broader environmental issues, closely intertwining climate, water and biodiversity.
It is in this context that, with the support of WWF France, Bel has formalized several ambitious policies on biodiversity, the protection of forests and natural ecosystems, the preservation of water resources and sponsorship actions in the field of agroforestry.
In 2023, the Group was one of the first players to join WWF France’s Nature Impact initiative, the first fund dedicated to forest preservation, combining biodiversity protection and carbon sequestration through Payments for Ecosystem Services (PES).
Sylvie Borias, Bel Group’s Director of Engagement and CSR, said: “For the past 13 years, we have been working with WWF France to reduce our environmental footprint and work towards a more sustainable food model. Through cooperation based on expertise and innovation, we have gradually integrated practices that are more respectful of natural resources, biodiversity and the climate, at every stage of our value chain.
The renewal of our partnership is further proof of our commitment to more sustainable food. It demonstrates our desire to make this transformation a long-term one, by working closely with key players to accelerate the necessary ecological transition of the agri-food sector. Faced with the growing challenges of climate change and the preservation of natural ecosystems, it is more necessary than ever to join forces and continue our efforts to build a future where food and respect for the planet go hand in hand. ».
Marie-Christine Korniloff, Director of Economic Relations at WWF France, said : “The combined effects of intensifying climate change and the collapse of biodiversity, detailed in our latest Living Planet report, are bringing us dangerously close to ecological tipping points with irreversible consequences. It is therefore imperative to act immediately and collectively to reverse this trend.
The historic partnership between WWF and Bel illustrates that a transition to more sustainable practices is not only possible, but essential. Its objective is to transform agricultural and food models, to protect and restore ecosystems, as through the Nature Impact initiative, and to raise awareness among all stakeholders – employees, partners and consumers – of the urgency of adopting more responsible practices.
We will continue to put all our energy at the service of nature and biodiversity, convinced that concrete and ambitious actions can help preserve our planet for future generations. ».
