160 YEARS OF HISTORY

FROM LÉON BEL'S Brilliance TO GLOBAL Industrial Might

Our journey is full of exciting twists and turns! It all started with the first portioned cheese, The Laughing Cow®… but that was just the beginning of our delicious adventure. Since then, we've traveled the world, adapting our recipes to the tastes and nutritional needs of each country. Today, we are amplifying our mission: to make healthier and more sustainable food accessible for everyone, by combining the best of dairy, fruits, and plants.

Bel is a family-owned group from the Jura region, named after its founder, Jules Bel. It was his son, Léon, who established the public company Fromageries Bel in 1922. Today, it is led by Antoine Fiévet, representing the 5th generation of family leadership.

A SPIRIT OF CONQUEST BEYOND OUR BORDERS

Bel's first subsidiary outside of France was established in 1929 in the United Kingdom, just eight years after The Laughing Cow® was created. From then on, nothing could stop the rise of products praised for their modern taste, preservation abilities, and durability during transport (thanks to clever manufacturing processes and packaging). Initially present in Western Europe, the Group expanded in the 1970s to the United States and Morocco, and later ventured into Syria, Japan, and China.

The stroke of genius? In 1924, the triangular portions and the iconic Red Cow instantly established a unique bond with consumers. So triumphant that by 1933, it joined the Tour de France caravan!

JULES BEL SETS UP HIS GRUYÈRE CHEESE MATURING AND TRADING BUSINESS IN ORGELET, JURA

A foundational chapter in the history of French cheese is written with the birth of this modest family establishment, which becomes Bel Frères in 1897, founded by Jules Bel's sons, Henri and Léon. Léon makes a groundbreaking discovery in 1917: the Swiss technique of cheese melting. This innovation allows for better preservation and easier transport of the product. This was a turning point for the company, as Léon Bel founded Fromageries Bel in 1922 and ventured into the world of industrial cheese production.

"Our family business model is a key asset in tackling today's challenges. We are a united collective grounded in humanistic values and a clear mission: to provide access to healthier and more responsible food for everyone across our three complementary areas—dairy, fruit, and plant-based products. This ambitious mission, 'For All For Good,' both drives and commits us."
