LAB’BEL, Guest at the SWAB International Contemporary Art Fair in Barcelona From May the 26th to the 29th, 2011
For its first international outing, Lab’Bel, Bel group’s artistic laboratory has received carte blanche from the SWAB contemporary art fair in Barcelona (Spain) to develop a multiform approach to the status of the artist.
From May 26 to 29, 2011, discussions led by Laurent Fiévet and Silvia Guerra of Lab’Bel will be based on and focus on six Solo Projects commissioned from young galleries at SWAB. The selected artists and galleries are: Quentin Armand (Galerie EGP, Paris), Mauro Cerqueira (Galeria Nuno Centeno, Porto), Jean Denant (L.A. Gallery, Plessan), Raúl Hevia (Galeria Nuble, Santander), Alejandra Laviada (Galerie Bendana-Pinel, Paris), and Isabelle Le Minh (Galerie Christophe Gaillard, Paris).
Second, a collective exhibit—Art for Life / Art for living—will present the works of the six winners of the Solo Projects and of six other artists invited by Lab’Bel who are currently in European residencies: Jonathas de Andrade and André Guedes at Gasworks (London), WindFerreira at the Pavillon du Palais de Tokyo (Paris) and Sergi Botella and Mariana Zamarbide at Hangar (Barcelona).
Third, an individual exhibit by Stefan Brüggemann (Galerie Yvon Lambert) will be presented at the famous Pavillon Mies van der Rohe. Entitled THE WORLD TRAPPED IN THE SELF (MIRRORS FOR WINDOWS), this exhibit, organized with the support of the Fundació Mies van der Rohe, SWAB and Galerie Yvon Lambert (Paris), will run from May 25 to 29.
Last, two “round tables” will be held on May 28 at the CCCB—Centre de Cultura Contemporeana de Barcelona—on the topic of the status of the artist today. A number of personalities from the European art scene will participate, including Tere Badia, director of Hangar, Alessio Antoniolli, director of Gasworks and Christian Marlhiot from the Pavillon du Palais de Tokyo.
These various proposals by Lab’Bel are based on consideration of the conditions of the “dialogue” between art, artists, society and the market.
Lab’Bel examines the relationship between the initial creative process—based on the development of concepts (today, the virtual is the very object of the exchange)—and lifestyles specific to the artist’s work. In this way, Lab’Bel wishes to act as a platform that may represent a “fair”, a place of transit and sharing, in order to consider the daily lives of artists and the ways they exist.
Echoing these areas of reflection, the architectural research platform “Petit CABANON” will present 300 square meters of exhibition space with “Art for Life / Art for Living”, a specific space within SWAB, held in a former World Fair pavilion.
